VISION AS REALITY, STRATEGY AS ACTION

Currently, more than ever before, when asked to advise on brand vision and company culture, I find myself stepping outside of my narrow remit to consider what the great Czech management practitioners and thinkers have achieved; what did they envisage beyond everyday managerial stress and the struggle for profitability, and what were they able to accomplish?

Tomas Bata taught us that before you are able to establish a great company, you have to establish yourself, and that when you embark on the endless journey towards knowing who you are you should not devote too much time to introspection.

For the sake of your family, your team and your values, you must be receptive to the stimulus of a new direction or a potential new impetus.

KNOW THYSELF

Simon Sinek’s popular book “Start With Why” (widely translated and available throughout Central Europe) advises company leaders to start with WHY.

This modern and perceptive theory explains that we are past the era when companies could get away with merely explaining HOW they produce goods or provide services, or just describe WHAT they do. Now companies have to show a higher business purpose that motivates their staff as well as their target consumer groups, and which Sinek goes so far as to suggest makes today’s market leading brands closer to social movements.

Having worked on branding projects for clients in the Czech Republic and further abroad, it has struck me that there is one very necessary prerequisite before you even start with WHY: put WHO before WHY.
